A Day in the Life of a Doula

Wednesday 5/11/22

Woke up around 7:15 this morning. First thing first….COFFEE. I’m addicted to good coffee and quiet time first thing in the morning. I get up early, while the house is still quiet to have a few moments of solitude. I taught my son this word around age 6, he STILL loves to say it. He says it sounds fancy.LMAO!

After scrolling through IG for about 20 mins, I remember I wanted to finish reading a chapter in Herbiary, before I got distracted by the incessant notifications going off on my IPhone.

After reading a bit, I usually check my to-do list and begin mentally preparing for my day.I’m a lover of a good podcast, so I’ll usually listen to my daily horoscope (Leo Today) and whatever other show I need to catch up on (Black Girl Bravado, Blunt Blowing Mama, Therapy for Black Girls, The Breakdown with Sean King, Empowering Appalachia and Fare of the Free Child) while watering my plants, making breakfast and cleaning up my kitchen.

After breakfast I’ll check my email and respond to any clients or potential clients before turning on some good music and getting a jump start on my to do list!

Today, I have a postpartum planning session with a family due late August. I’m excited to meet my new clients and see where I’ll be working and how I can support them. What’s in my doula bag? I always carry my calendar, a folder with my clients information and resources, a snack (I stay hungry)and a water bottle. After I get a good idea about how I can support this family and we get some times/dates on the calendar I’ll usually run home for lunch, check in with my little people, before I head back out to the salon on Wednesdays and Fridays.

And it’s only 2:00

There are definitely a lot of text exchanges going on today. I text with 4 of my clients today, three of them pregnant and 1 postpartum.
